Products / Syphilis

Syphilis is a resurging global disease that has recently experienced a resurgence following decades of decline. The resurgence has had a significant impact on HIV- positive individuals.

An estimated twelve million syphilis cases occur globally every year, with 6 million occurring in South East Asia, 3.5 million in Sub-Saharan Africa, and 1.3 million in Latin America.

Syphilis is a bacterial infection usually transmitted through sexual activity. It can also be passed from an infected mother to an unborn child. Studies of pregnant women indicated rates of syphilis infection to be 17% in Cameroon, 8% in South Africa, and 8% in the South Pacific. In many African countries, all pregnant women must be tested for both HIV and syphilis.

While it is curable, syphilis, if left untreated, can lead to irreversible damage to the heart and nervous system.

The Rapid 1-2-3® HEMA Dipstick Format is an immunoassay for the detection of antibodies to syphilis (anti-Treponema pallidum) in human whole blood, serum, or plasma. The kits are available in units of 25 or 100 tests and include all reagents necessary for testing in field conditions without the need for any equipment.

The Rapid 1-2-3® HEMA EXPRESS® rapid diagnostic syphilis test will be introduced shortly, upon completion of testing and validation.
